Philip Dunne MP helped Shropshire Chamber of Commerce organise an Export for Growth event last Friday to encourage Shropshire businesses to develop export markets. The event, held in Bridgnorth promoted the benefits that global trade can bring to local companies, helping to create jobs and growth within local communities.
Mr Dunne said:
“This government has recognised the role which exports play in stimulating economic growth. We have set ourselves a goal of doubling the number of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) which export over the next few years, so I wanted to encourage local businesses to get on the export band wagon. This was a very successful event with presentations from several local businesses demonstrating that SMEs can and do trade successfully overseas. Not only can this encourage innovation, but also helps build a more sustainable business at home, which creates jobs here in Shropshire.”
The Government has increased funding for UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) by £140 million over two years to help more firms export as well as build the capacity of British chambers overseas. Government is also launching a new £1.5 billion export finance facility to support the purchase of British exports in addition to extra support to help small and medium sized businesses export aboard and assist them with the costs of attending trade shows overseas through expanding the Tradeshow Access Programme.
Richard Sheehan, Chief Executive of the Shropshire Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise, chaired the event with presentations from Paul Noon, Regional Director West Midlands at UK Trade & Investment, and Cllr Tina Woodward, Deputy Portfolio Holder Economic Growth & Prosperity, Shropshire Council. Companies presenting included Filtermist from Bridgnorth, Jesmonite from Bishop’s Castle and Britpart from Craven Arms.
