South Shropshire MP Philip Dunne has welcomed todays Queen’s Speech, setting out the Government’s plans for legislation for the coming year.
Following last week’s election, in which many people voted Conservative for the first time, the Government has wasted no time in putting forward the most radical Queen’s Speech in a generation to deliver on the public priorities.
The Government will get Brexit done, ensuring we leave the EU at the end of January, and move swiftly on to domestic priorities. At the heart of the Queen’s Speech is the first ever commitment to enshrine in law a multi-year NHS funding settlement, with an extra £33.9 billion per year – the largest cash injection in the history of the NHS.
The Queen’s Speech was far reaching, including plans for legislation on agriculture and fisheries, trade, immigration, public services, law and order, employment, infrastructure, and defence. Mr Dunne, a keen environmental campaigner in Westminster, also welcomed in particular the Government’s plans to bring forward legislation to protect the environment.
Mr Dunne said: “This Queen’s Speech is radical and wide ranging - showing how we will repay the faith voters placed in this Government to deliver on the public’s priorities. We will get Brexit done, and then continue with an exciting programme of domestic action which will benefit South Shropshire and the whole UK.
I am particularly pleased to see protection for our environment feature so prominently, with a pathway to net zero by 2050 and our landmark Environmental Bill – which will establish a new Office for Environmental Protection, increase local powers to tackle air pollution, introduce charges for specified single use plastic items, and ban exports of polluting plastic waste to non-OECD countries.”
