Former Defence Minister, Philip Dunne MP, has condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine and called for the strongest possible sanctions against the Russian regime.
Mr Dunne said “Like everyone else, I woke up to the alarming images coming out of Ukraine of a full scale, state on state, invasion by Russia, entirely unprovoked. Most of us had hoped annexation of states in Europe by waging war had been consigned to history. I certainly did not expect to see this in my lifetime. I am utterly appalled by this assault by an authoritarian aggressor on its democratic neighbour.
This crisis threatens the international world order, which will affect us all. I look to see strong British leadership today, with the strongest possible sanctions being imposed, which will really bite, and make Russia realise that Western allies are not going to sit by and allow Putin to invade other countries with impunity.
The Prime Minister has addressed the nation earlier and will address the House of Commons later today. I look forward to hearing how the UK will respond to this outrageous and flagrant disregard for the sovereignty of Ukraine.”
